Seinfeld on ‘30 Rock’
[photopress:NUP_109595_0827.jpg,thumb,pp_image]Jerry Seinfeld appears on Thursday’s typically sharp season premiere of “30 Rock.” He signed on partly as a favor to his pal Tina Fey and partly to promote his “Bee Movie,” out next month. NBC offered a transcript of a canned, inhouse interview with the man who once powered the network to ratings heights.
Okay, we’ll bite. Here’s his answer to a question about plugging his movie:
JERRY SEINFELD: It really had nothing to do with “Bee
Movie.” And they put it in the script. I really didn’t
ask them to. But everybody thought it was funny, so we
are doing it… It was just supposed to be on NBC.
And NBC is promoting the movie. And I’m doing some
interstitial comedy vignettes for them that I call TV
juniors, little one-minute long comedy pieces. But this
was, like, a separate thing. But it turned out that
they came up with this very funny idea of Jack Doneghy
coming up with SeinfeldVision, and they would put
me digitally in all these NBC shows. It was funny.
What, they thought we’d put that in the real newspaper?

‘Bionic’ breakout
[photopress:NUP_105443_0198.jpg,thumb,pp_image]Amid the crush of newcomers, the ratings standout was NBC’s “Bionic Woman,” which had the best premiere ratings the network’s seen in eight years, since “The West Wing.” The “Bionic” remake beat ABC’s “Private Practice,” which was a strong No. 2, suggesting there’s a big enough Wednesday night audience for both shows to do well.

Recount on ‘The War’
PBS trumpeted a huge win for Ken Burns’ “The War,” claiming an “estimated gross audience” of 18.7 million viewers for two airings of the two-hour debut. In fact, that’s if you count anyone in certain major markets who caught six minutes’ worth. The way the other networks keep score is by measuring the average number of viewers at any given moment. That comes out to 7.3 million viewers. Very good for PBS, but not record-shattering.
This debate about the ratings yardstick is not new. The same discrepancy arose a few weeks ago when Univision claimed its telecast of a Democratic candidate forum drew 4.6 million viewers, making it the most-watched presidential debate so far. In fact, that was by the anyone-who-caught-six-minutes yardstick. The average total-viewer figure was 2.1 million.

‘Mad Men’ gets second season
AMC today confirmed its critical hit “Mad Men,” about philandering, hard-drinking and ever-smoking advertising executives in 1960, pre-feminism, will return for a second season. The first 13 episodes were not just the highpoint of summer TV viewing, but a highlight of television in general.
The first season finale is Oct. 18.

It’s time for Denver (Colorado) Doings
First off, I want to congratulate the Colorado Rockies. With yesterday’s sweep of the L.A. Dodgers, they have guaranteed that they will not have a losing season this year. That far exceeds my expectations for the year, and everything else now, as far as I can see, is gravy.
Of course, while they were ruining L.A.’s day (and I’m trying so hard not to gloat, I really am), the San Diego Padres did not have the common courtesy to lose. So now the Rox are headed to Petco Park, where ironically enough the pets can’t go. And they’re taking all of Denver’s excitement with them, as this Friday is fairly calm, as Fridays go.
Indeed, the most exciting thing we’ve got going right now is the Colorado Soccer Classic. Oh yes, when college soccer is the best game in town, you know the schedule is light. I kid, I kid! Like I would insult women who could kick a ball into my head so hard that it would leave a permanent “swoosh”-shaped dent in my skull.

“The Big Board Is Up…”
So replied Denver Film Society Artistic Director Ron Henderson this morning via email.
Yup. “The new Big Board is up,” he reported, “and we start filling in the blanks at 3 o’clock today, continuing into the weekend.”
One of the finer rites of fall in Denver comes when the DFS folk hoist the wall-colonizing grease board on which they plot the schedule for the Starz Denver Film Festival (Nov. 8-18)
This year marks the fest’s 30th anniversary. And, if the trend >> MORE
Rockies still providing thrills
It has been a long time since the Colorado Rockies were still playing relevant games the third week of the baseball season. But here we are entering the last week of the season and the kid Rocks still have a chance to get into the playoffs.
It will not be easy as they have 6 of their last 9 on the road and currently trail the Padres in the wild card by five games in the loss column. The good news is the Rockies play the Padres this weekend and if they sweep and that is a big if things could get very interesting.
No matter what happens though this year could be a turning point for the Rockies. They will most likely best the total for most wins in a season which was 83 and they have a bright future.
The fans have been showing up in September something that has not happened here in a long time.
The key will be what the Rockies will do in the offseason. Matt Holiday needs to be resigned and the Rockies could use a veteran starter that can help the new kids along.
All in all it has been a great ride for this town that usually turns its attention to the Broncos in July. If the Rockies sweep the Padres it should get really interesting down the stretch.

Grandpa defends innocent dog after boy attacked
What should police do about “Haley,” a second rottweiller in a Northglenn home, after a 3-year-old was attacked by “Zeus?” Richard Portugal says the city is trying to kill both dogs after one of them attacked his grandson. Portugal says the dogs aren’t dangerous and that the boy startled them. (Read the story.)
